Overview

About PTFE Spring Energized Seals

A spring energized seal combines a machined PTFE (or filled PTFE) jacket with a metal spring energizer. The spring provides a consistent load on the sealing lips at low pressure and compensates for wear and hardware variation; as system pressure rises, it acts on the jacket and adds to the sealing force.

Because the jacket is PTFE-based, these seals are considered where conventional elastomer seals may not be suitable — aggressive media, elevated or very low temperatures, low-friction requirements or high surface speeds. The right jacket material, spring type and profile depend on the application, and each seal is selected against the operating conditions you share with us.

How it works

A PTFE Jacket, Energized by a Spring

  • PTFE constructionThe jacket is machined from PTFE or a filled PTFE compound, giving broad chemical resistance and a wide working temperature range.
  • Spring energizingPTFE has little elastic memory, so a metal spring inside the jacket provides the initial sealing load and compensates for wear and hardware variation.
  • Pressure assistedAs system pressure rises it acts inside the jacket and adds to the sealing force on the lips.
  • Low frictionPTFE runs with low friction and low stick-slip, which suits limited lubrication and fine movement.
  • Chemical resistancePTFE resists almost all industrial chemicals. Spring material is chosen to suit the media as well.
  • High temperatureConsidered where the temperature is beyond what conventional elastomers are suited to. Limits depend on compound, design and application.
  • Rotary, static and dynamicProfiles are available for rotary shafts, reciprocating rods and pistons, and static face sealing, where applicable.

PTFE Spring Energized Seals — Profiles and Specifications

Sizes and ratings are confirmed against your application. Where a value is not listed, it is available as per application requirement.

V-Spring (Cantilever) Energized Seals

A cantilever V-shaped spring gives a flexible, moderate load on the sealing lips. Commonly considered for reciprocating and rotary dynamic duty.

  • Cantilever V-spring energizer
  • Flexible lips accommodate hardware variation
  • Rod, piston and rotary configurations

Helical Spring Energized Seals

A helical wound spring gives a higher, more concentrated load. Commonly considered for static and slow dynamic sealing.

  • Helical wound ribbon spring
  • Higher unit load on the sealing lips
  • Static and slow-moving applications

Canted Coil Spring Energized Seals

A canted (slanted) coil spring provides a near-constant load over a wide deflection range, useful where friction needs to be controlled.

  • Canted coil spring energizer
  • Consistent load across deflection
  • Considered where friction control matters

Flanged Rotary Spring Energized Seals

A flanged heel is clamped in the housing to stop the seal turning with the shaft in rotary service.

  • Flanged heel clamps in the hardware
  • Prevents seal rotation
  • For rotary shaft applications

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

When is a PTFE spring energized seal used instead of an elastomer seal?

They are typically considered when temperature, chemical exposure, friction or surface speed is beyond what a conventional elastomer seal is suited to. Whether one is right for your equipment depends on the operating conditions and hardware.

What does the spring do?

PTFE has little elastic memory of its own, so a metal spring inside the jacket provides the initial sealing load and keeps the lips in contact as they wear or as hardware moves. System pressure then adds to the sealing force.

Which spring type should I choose?

V-spring (cantilever), helical and canted-coil springs each give a different load characteristic. The choice depends on whether the duty is static, reciprocating or rotary and on friction and pressure requirements — our engineers can advise once they know the application.
