Overview

About Rotary Shaft Seals

Rotary shaft seals — widely known as oil seals or radial lip seals — sit between a rotating shaft and a stationary housing. A flexible sealing lip runs on the shaft surface to retain oil or grease, while the outer diameter seals statically in the housing bore. Many designs add a garter spring to maintain lip contact and a secondary dust lip to keep contamination away from the primary lip.

Sealing Technologies supplies rotary shaft seals in standard profiles and in customized constructions for demanding duty — single and double-lip industrial oil seals, including hydrodynamic wave-lip designs, in Viton™ (FKM), PTFE, NBR and EPDM, with options for high shaft speeds and chemical media. Our sales engineers help match the profile and material to the shaft, the media and the operating conditions of your equipment.

Selection

What Material Selection Depends On

There is no single best seal material. The right choice follows from the operating conditions — share these with our engineers and we will recommend a suitable seal.

  • TemperatureOperating and peak temperature at the sealing lip.
  • PressureAny pressure acting on the seal, steady or intermittent.
  • SpeedShaft speed and the resulting surface speed at the lip.
  • Chemical exposureCleaning agents, process chemicals and additives.
  • MediaThe oil, grease or fluid to be retained.
  • Shaft conditionSurface finish, hardness, run-out and wear.
  • Application environmentDust, water, scale and other contamination.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What information is needed to quote a rotary shaft seal?

Shaft diameter, housing bore diameter and seal width are the starting point. Profile type, material, the medium being sealed, operating temperature, shaft speed and any pressure help our engineers confirm the right seal. A drawing, part number or sample also works.

What does TC mean on an oil seal?

TC is a common profile designation for a rotary shaft seal with a rubber-covered outside diameter, a metal reinforcing insert, a spring-loaded primary sealing lip and an additional dust lip.

Which material should I choose for a rotary seal?

It depends on temperature, media, shaft speed, pressure and the operating environment. NBR is widely used for general mineral-oil and grease duty, while FKM, HNBR, silicone or PTFE are considered when conditions are more demanding. Our engineers can recommend a material for your application.
